Hate crime incidents are alarmingly underreported, and from 2019 to 2022, we have witnessed a troubling trend of increasing occurrences. In our recent LGBTQAI2S+ safety meetings, held in anticipation of the 2024 Presidential Election, we courageously addressed the pressing issue of hate crimes that threaten our community. It is clear that the historical tensions between the police and the LGBTQAI2S+ community in Boston have fostered a deep distrust in reporting these critical incidents.


Now, more than ever, it is imperative that we empower our community members. We must clearly articulate the differences between hate crimes and hate incidents and provide guidance on the appropriate channels for reporting these offenses. Additionally, we need to establish transparent expectations regarding the outcomes after a report is made.
